About UUIDs
A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier), also known as GUID, is a 128-bit identifier that is unique across space and time.
UUID Versions
- Version 1 - Based on timestamp and MAC address
- Version 4 - Random (most commonly used)
UUID Format
A UUID is displayed as 32 hexadecimal digits in 5 groups separated by hyphens:
xxxxxxxx-xxxx-Mxxx-Nxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx
Where M indicates the version and N indicates the variant.
